Transmen or trans men are transgender or transsexual people who were identified female at birth based on genital appearance (or, in cases of intersexuality, were later assigned to the female gender) and who feel that this is not an accurate or complete description of themselves. They have a male gender identity and/or present themselves as men and desire to live in a male gender role. Some employ testosterone therapy to meet this goal and/or undergo procedures such as mastectomy, hysterectomy, metoidioplasty, phalloplasty, urethraplasty, scrotoplasty, vaginectomy, and/or other surgeries, while some transmen do not make any physical changes to their bodies. Transmen can come from the entire female-to-male side of the transgender spectrum, ranging from female-to-male transsexual persons to drag kings (female cross-dressers or transvestites are rarely used designations) who consider themselves transgender. Female-to-male people are also sometimes known as "transmasculine." Many transmen, however, do not describe themselves as such. Some prefer to be called simply men, often because they feel that their gender transition is complete and/or that they have always been men. Others do not consider their gender identity to be the same as that of cisgendered men, do not wish to live in a traditional male gender role, or have other, individual reasons to prefer a different self-identification. Boi is a deliberately altered spelling of boy, and is sometimes used as a synonym for male when referring to young adults. 'Boi' may refer to a young-appearing (and in reality relatively young) bisexual or homosexual male, especially one who is somewhat effeminate, or who merely wishes to distinguish himself with a different term from heterosexual boys. It may also refer to a female-born or female-bodied person—sometimes transsexual, transgendered, or intersexed, sometimes not—who generally does not identify as, or only partially identifies as feminine, female, a girl, or a woman, although some bois identify as one or more of these. Bois almost always identify as lesbians, dykes, or queers; many are also genderqueer or practice genderfuck. Bois can prefer a range of pronouns, including 'he', 'she', or gender-neutral pronouns. Some transmen identify as bois, but others object to being called 'boi,' preferring to simply be called 'boy,' 'man,' or 'transman.' Some butch lesbians, female crossdressers, and tomboys also identify as bois, and some people use the word 'boi' to refer to a young butch. Pangender is a term for people who feel that they cannot be labeled as male or female in gender. These people feel that they are; mixed gender, identify equally with "both" genders, are both male and female, feel that they are genderless or feel that they are some other gender all together. The term is meant by the queer community to be one that is inclusive and means "all genders". Whereas sex refers to someone's anatomy, gender refers either to gender identity or gender role, the roles and qualities that society associates with being either male or female. In some cases, pangender individuals are able to live with the majority of the physical characteristics they were born with, but frequently displays the outward appearance, behavior and/or clothing of the opposite gender. In other cases, they were born intersex. Pangender individuals are happy living "in between" and have no desire to live exclusively as one gender or the other. Problems arise with pangendered individuals because often gender identification is so closely intertwined with sexual gratification making it a difficult subject to talk freely about. Because of the sexual aspect it can become easy for others to dismiss them as "fetishists" and ignore the gender identification aspects of their make up.

Genderqueer is a gender identity. A genderqueer person is someone who identifies as a gender other than "man" or "woman," or someone who identifies as neither, both, or some combination thereof. In relation to the gender binary (the view that there are only two genders), genderqueer people generally identify as more "both/and" or "neither/nor," rather than "either/or." Some genderqueer people see their identity as one of many different genders outside of man and woman, some see it as a term encompassing all gender identities outside of the gender binary, some believe it encompasses binary genders among others, some may identify as a-gender and some see it as a third gender in addition to the traditional two. The commonality is that all genderqueer people reject the notion that there are only two genders in the world. The term genderqueer is also occasionally used more broadly as an adjective to refer to people who are in some way gender-transgressive, and could have any gender identity (see Alternative Meanings, below). Androgyne, Intergender, Bigender, Third Gender, Neuter/Neutrois/Agender, Gender Fluid may also be used to describe where one lies on a gender spectrum or in gender spheres (outside the normal binary genders).

Cisgender is an adjective that means non-transgender. In other words, a cisgender woman is someone who was female at birth, raised as a girl, and who identifies as a woman. In contrast, a transgender woman is someone who was male at birth, was most likely but not necessarily raised as a boy, and who identifies as a woman. That is, it provides a name for a gender identity that society considers to match or be appropriate for one's sex. The word is used in many transgender-inclusive and aware communities that want to challenge the notion that transgender is "abnormal," and instead reflects the view that there is a broad range of gender experience, rather than one "normal" one. Some people may prefer "cisgender" to "biological", "genetic", or "real" male or female because of the implications of those words. Using the term "biological female" or "genetic female" to describe cisgender women implies that transgender women are also not biologically female; since there is debate over whether transsexuality has a genetic or biological cause, some people may believe that transgender women are also biologically female. Transgender women also may find it offensive to describe cisgender women as "real women," since they consider themselves to be real women. In addition, the terms "biological" and "genetic" leave ambiguity about how to describe people with androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS). The word cisgender is rarely used outside transsexual-inclusive communities and thus, it is not often used to self-identify.
